Printer Configuration on Ubuntu Gutsy (7.10) and Hardy (8.04)


  1. .On the Start Menu, choose Administration → Printing to display the dialog box as below. Then click the New Printer button
  2. Select the option Windows Printer Via Samba. Then click Browse to display a list of printer sharing in the
  3. Note the picture below, the display shows the printer disharing-printer on the network using samba. Then select the printer you want to use.
  4. Make sure you know the type of printer driver and you want to use it. Then select the type of start and printer drivers available in the list
  5. Note the picture below shows the printer has been successfully entered. Then click Print Test Page button to try to print, or click the Make Default to make as the default printer

Configuring samba sharing printer

We can make Ubuntu as a server sharing the printer. Configuration process must be done as user root. open the terminal.

Start Menu -> Accesories -> Terminal
Next login as root, and type the command:


$ gedit /etc/samba/smb.conf

Some lines must be edited is;


  1. In the authentication, security add a security = share
  2. In the authentication, encrypt passwords = true
  3. In the authentication, guest account = nobody
  4. In the printing, load printers = yes
  5. In the printing, printing = cups
  6. In the printing, printcap name = cups
  7. On the share definition, tag printers, browseable = yes
  8. On the share definition, tag printers, public = yes


You can enter some additional configuration to make sure samba is running smoothly, as follows;


  • In the networking, the interface is filled with the engine at that time
  • At the global - browsing identification, give a new value called NetBIOS name with the desired name. Most easily, the user name of the machine

Save and restart the samba service using the command:

$ /etc/init.d/samba restart

  1. On the Start Menu, choose Administration → Printing. Then click the New Printer icon
  2. At Step 1, select Network Printer option with Windows Printer (SMB). Wait some time, the system will try to detect the printer on-shared
  3. Next view some of the printer is detected, click cancel pendeteksian process continues until the printer is finished. The name that appears under the name of the server hostname in printer sharing
  4. following list of hostnames that do printer sharing. Select a course in accordance with their needs. Be sure to identify the type of printer and the drivers that will be used. Do not forget to choose a printer that disharing. Then click Forward. (Username and password are blank)
  5. the next step, select the printer driver used. Then the printer is ready to use.

Install Wbar In Ubuntu Jaunty (9.04)

Wbar is a quick-launch bar (not a dock) that has an appearance similar to Avant Window Manager and Cairo Dock. It is GTK (Gnome) based but can work in all desktop environments. It does not require a compositing manager to be installed and is therefore quicker and more suitable for low-end hardware systems. It is the default in the Google gOS desktop and is available as a .deb package from Google. Download and install (from the command-line Terminal):

$ wget http://wbar.googlecode.com/files/wbar_1.3.3_i386.deb

$ sudo dpkg -i wbar_1.3.3_i386.deb

Start wbar with custom start options (e.g. by pressing alt+F2). Here is an example:


$ wbar -isize 48 -j 1 -p bottom -balfa 40 -bpress -nanim 3 -z 2.5 -above-desk

Here is another example:


$ wbar -above-desk -pos bottom -isize 60 -nanim 1 -bpress -jumpf 0.0 -zoomf 1.5

For a full list of command-line startup options, see:


$ wbar --help


Tip: If you want the "wave" effect just increase the -nanim value. I like the icons to just pop up so I don't use it, but with 9 icons 5 there is a nice "wave" effect.


Obviously, you could create a menu item with the command line options (similar to the examples above), or a batch file that can be automatically started at system startup (as a cron event or startup session).

You can also change wbar startup options by editing the configuration file:

$ sudo gedit /usr/share/wbar/dot.wbar


See this example configuration file. However, not all options are able to be set from the configuration file and must be run from the command line. For more info see this wbar guide.

A simple wbar configuration utility can be downloaded as a .deb package and installed:


$ wget http://koti.kapsi.fi/~ighea/wbarconf/wbarconf_0.7.2-1_i386.deb


$ sudo dpkg -i wbarconf_0.7.2-1_i386.deb

To Install Adobe Acrobat Reader on Firefox Plugins need the Medibuntu repository, then follow steps below:

Set up the Medibuntu Repository

Install Open Office 3.0.0 in Ubntu Hardy

To install open office 3.0.0 we first have to download the packet OOo_3.0.0_LinuxIntel_install_en-US_deb.tar.gz after downloading open terminal, go to the directory that you have downloaded. remove first before installing the old open office through Synaptic Package Manager, then remove the old open office.


step install

$ tar xvfz OOo_3.0.0_LinuxIntel_install_en-US_deb.tar.gz

Then Install

$ sudo dpkg-i *. deb

completed, eith .....!!! not all of them, after that install desktop-integration office to open the menu appears on the office.

$ cd desktop-integration /

$ sudo dpkg-i debian-openoffice.org3.0-menus_3.0-9354_all.deb

There is an error message, try to look carefully, what the conflict package ...??? open-office core. Now remove the packages that conflict using Synaptic package manager. after that install more desktop-integration with the command above.

Problems installing HP Laserjet P1006 in Ubuntu Hardy

HP Laserjet P1005/1006/1007/1008 requires a special driver that can run on ubuntu, because the drivers that Repo hardy not compatible.

Now the problem can not be memngenali ubuntu usb_printerid or usb printer, now we run with the command

$ sudo usb_printerid /dev/usb/lp0

the printer is now detected and a message will appear

$ sudo usb_printerid /dev/usb/lp0

However, when the printing device dead checks conducted ago

/dev/usb/lp0

Message :

Error: No such file or directory: can’t open ‘/dev/usb/lp0′

but this will run on ubuntu gutsy. if the above step in the install on gutsy does not have a problem. means that the problem in hardy HP Laserjet P1005/1006/1007/1008

Download driver hp with the command

$ wget -O foo2zjs.tar.gz http://foo2zjs.rkkda.com/foo2zjs.tar.gz

foo2zjs.tar.gz

extact downloaded file

$ tar xzvf foo2zjs.tar.gz

go to directory /foo2zjs

$ cd foo2zjs

install driver

$ make
$ ./getweb p1006
$ sudo make install
$ sudo make install-hotplug

in gutsy, if not have a problem, but still not in the hardy compatible. we wait for changes

Recovery Ubuntu For Default Setting

Reset user settings (all linux distro)


1. Login As Root on the terminal with the command

$sudo su

2. Change Direktory you go to the home direktory
3. Delete all Direktory the tesembunyi in these direktory
with by type :

$ rm-drf .*

4. Reboot your Computer with the command

$ reboot

To speed up the connection and increase the bandwidth clogged hardy can use the command:

$ sudo gedit/etc/sysctl.conf

paste the script below on the bottom
